Antifungal

Quick Facts

Description: Antifungals are substances that kill or inhibit the growth of fungi. They are used to treat and prevent fungal infections.

Mechanism of Action: Antifungals work by targeting structures or processes that are essential for fungal survival but are different from those in human cells. Some disrupt the fungal cell membrane, causing leakage and cell death. Others interfere with fungal cell wall synthesis, preventing growth. Some antifungals inhibit the production of ergosterol, a crucial component of fungal cell membranes (similar to cholesterol in human cells).

Common Uses: Antifungals are used to treat a wide range of fungal infections, including athlete's foot, ringworm, jock itch, yeast infections (candidiasis), nail fungus, and more serious systemic fungal infections. Examples of herbs with antifungal properties include Tea Tree oil, Garlic, and Oregano oil. *Consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections.*
